It's Not a Lottery

Imagine if you had the opportunity to play a lottery where the odds of winning were very low (as usual), but instead of paying for each ticket, you were paid for each ticket. Would you play? Would you be crazy to not play?

While it's not a lottery, I have an opportunity that is a little similar to that paid-per-ticket lottery scenario. The odds are very low, and the payoff — while not in the millions — is nothing to sneeze at. A key difference between this opportunity and a lottery is that luck, by itself, is not the deciding factor. Of course, as with anything in life, randomness can play a significant role.

This particular opportunity is more like a popularity contest. The more effort I put into it, and the more others help me, the greater my odds are of "winning." Read on to see how this relates to my books and how you might help.

The opportunity I'm referring to is the KDP Select All-Stars incentive being offered by Amazon to authors who have their books enrolled in the KDP Select program. Instead of random selection of a ticket in a lottery, some hefty bonuses (up to $25,000!) will be given to the most-popular authors and books within a month. Popularity in this case means having books downloaded, at no extra cost to the reader, via two programs that Amazon offers.

I've written about these programs recently, so take a look at that blog post to learn a bit more about Kindle Unlimited (KU), which has no device requirements, and the Kindle Owners' Lending Library (KOLL), which requires a Kindle device and an Amazon Prime membership (which you can try with a free trial). I'm going up against authors who are much more well-known, which makes the odds of winning a bonus very low. However, every time someone borrows one of my eligible books (KOLL) or reads at least 10% of it (KU), I get paid anyway. This is why it's like getting paid for each ticket of a lottery!

As of this writing, my books Two Boys, Two Planets and Lesson One: Revolution! are available through the KU and KOLL programs. Depending on how things go this month, I might add one or more titles (existing books and/or a new one).

If you sign up for Kindle Unlimited, or if you have a Kindle device and are an Amazon Prime member (or sign up for a free trial), you can read either of these books at no added cost, and doing so will inch me closer toward a bonus for the month. If you know others who might be interested in reading my work, I would sincerely appreciate it if you would pass this information along to them!

Remember, you don't need a special e-reader device to read e-books. You can read a Kindle book on your computer, your phone, your tablet, etc. Naturally, this is also true for the people you know. You might not have seen someone holding a Kindle, but they might be an avid reader gobbling up every Kindle book they can get their hands on to read on their phone. Rather than asking yourself if you know someone who "reads Kindle books," you could ponder whether you know people who simply like to read. Maybe they would be interested in taking a look at one of my books, at no extra cost!

Many thanks in advance for any help in getting the word out about what I'm trying to accomplish this month!
