If you haven't stopped by my virtual war memorial cemetery for the US armed forces in Iraq, please take a moment to do that now.
Here's an "interesting" quote...
"The sooner we get this relief in the hands of the American people, the sooner they can begin to do their job of being good consumers."
House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio.
This government attitude that we have a "job" to be "good consumers" is asinine and short-sighted. I challenge US citizens to defy that notion, and do what is right for them (and their nation) in the short and long term: Eliminate debt first, then save enough to get through "rainy days." After that, invest carefully to diversify your income. Finally, only "consume" when you can really afford it -- not when the government tells you it's your "duty" to do so.
I have posted a PDF file with a transcript of my "PoliSnake04" blog, which discussed the 2004 campaign for US President (and other political races and issues). You'll either find it amusing or inflammatory, or maybe both! Anyway, download the attached file (listed below) and see what you think. I also now have a page that collects my political bumper stickers and postcards which you may or may not appreciate!
A society that shuns personal responsibility will likewise shun personal liberty. A nation thrives best when its citizens have liberty; liberty cannot thrive, or even last, without responsibility. In the 20th Century, we saw the citizens of the United States moving farther and farther away from personal responsibility -- seeking "government relief" from problems instead of solving problems, leaping to blame anything and anybody for personal failings, and denying the link between personal efforts and personal gains. As responsibility eroded, so did liberty erode.
In these early years of the 21st Century, US citizens expect the government to do everything for them, and they pay handsomely in taxes to support the government's efforts, which (for the money spent) are typically ineffective. Meanwhile, abominations such as the PATRIOT Act pass into law to "protect" citizens while stripping away Constitutional rights. Other assaults on liberty, such as the DMCA, are passed into law to protect corporations from living, breathing citizens. When will those citizens be protected from over-reaching government? When will those citizens care? How far must the US slump before its peoples awake and realize the pipe dream of living without personal responsibility is a recipe for chaos and ruin?
If you think the above statements are nonsense, you won't find much of interest here, for your dreams of "good government" still delude you. If you are already awake, the following are some links you might find interesting:
