A Bad Start to NaNoWriMo 2008

So I decided to do NaNoWriMo this year after all, as I mentioned here. But, as I also mentioned at that linked page, the actual launch of the event this year was, for me, marred by the fact that our house was the target of repeated vandalism just hours before. With the kids upset and with me on high alert for any additional trouble from the local morons, thoughts about writing a novel were on a distant back shelf. I salvaged things a bit by writing a few hundred words before I finally gave up and went to sleep (on the couch, with a baseball bat by my side), but it really set a negative tone for the weekend.

Now it's Sunday evening and, despite getting my hour back from the silliness known as Daylight Savings Time, I am not where I should be regarding this new NaNoWriMo project. In fact, as the end of day 2 nears, I haven't reached the day 1 minimum goal. Just not a good start!

My main consolation, though, is that completing 50,000 words this year is not as important as the value of this "prequel" for finishing the novel I started in 2006. Even if I don't write another word in this year's project, I have already established more history for my main character than I had before. So, in that sense, I've already "won."

But, yes, I do want to get to 50,000 words, just so I can say I've won NaNoWriMo again!

By the way, if you're another WriMo this year (that's the word for writers participating in NaNoWriMo), be sure to sign up for my free mailing list, which is all about finishing your novel!
